10 tips for safe grilling
It's easy, right? You fire up the grill, place your food above the heat source, flip the pieces a few times and remove when they look done.
But safe grilling isn't quite that simple. Anytime you handle or prepare meat, chicken or seafood (hereafter referred to as meat) you need to take extra precautions to prevent food-borne illnesses - illnesses that occur when food is poorly handled or improperly cooked.
Grilling can pose other health threats as well. Higher heat and charring can create compounds that may increase cancer risk. Flare-ups from dripping fat and smoke that coats and blackens the meat also may produce cancer-causing agents (carcinogens).
But don't toss out your tongs yet. If you take a few precautions, grilling can be a safe and healthy way to prepare foods. Here are 10 tips for grilling with care:
- Prepare a safe grilling space. Choose a well-ventilated area and only use approved fire starters if you're using a charcoal grill. To prevent burns, keep children away from the grill and make sure you have flameproof mitts, cooking utensils with long handles and a squirt bottle of water nearby.
- Clean the grilling surface thoroughly before cooking. By removing charred food debris, you help reduce exposure to possible cancer-causing substances. Scrub the grilling surface with a wire grill brush to loosen charred food particles. Then, rub the grilling surface with vegetable oil using a paper towel, or coat the grate with nonstick cooking spray. This prevents the food from sticking.
- Heat the grill before adding food. Heat your gas grill about five to 10 minutes to kill bacteria. If using a charcoal grill, wait until the charcoal turns ash white. Now your grill is ready for food.
- If you use charcoal, let the starter fluid burn off before putting food on the grill. Never squirt starter fluid on smoldering charcoals because it can cause a flare-up or serious burns.
- Completely defrost meat before grilling so that it cooks evenly. Thaw meat in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature. To defrost meat faster, use the microwave or place sealed packages of meat in cold water. Grill the meat immediately after defrosting. After grilling, remove any charred or blackened material from the food's surface.
- Heat foods first that require long cooking times. Microwave, boil or bake foods that require a long time to cook, such as bratwurst or thick pieces of meat. Then, grill them briefly for that smoky, outdoor flavor. This prevents overcooking and charring and the formation of unhealthy compounds. Another way to prevent overcooking is to "butterfly" thick pieces of meat. Cut the meat down the center almost all of the way through, leaving a portion attached. Then, place the meat on the grill. The meat will fan out and look like butterfly wings, hence the name. This method reduces the thickness of the meat and shortens the amount of time needed to cook the center of the meat.
- Never mix uncooked meats with cooked meats. Any harmful bacteria present in raw meat could contaminate safely cooked meat. Also, don't let the juices from uncooked meats come in contact with food that is ready to serve. For example, when removing cooked food from the grill, don't put it on the same plate that had held raw meat, unless you first wash the plate with soap and water.
- Marinate food, and do it in the refrigerator rather than on the counter. Marinades can enhance flavor, tenderize and keep foods moist while grilling. Try mixtures of herbs or spices with wine, soy sauce or lemon juice. If you plan to use the same marinade later as a table sauce, boil it for at least three minutes to kill any bacteria present. You may need to strain the marinade to remove any blood that coagulated during cooking.
Marinades help tenderize tough cuts of meat. In addition to being delicious, evidence indicates marinades may have health benefits. Marinating meats before grilling reduces cancer causing substances called heterocyclic amines (HCAs). These occur when you burn or char muscle meats - red meat, chicken and fish - over high heat. Although studies show HCAs cause cancer in animals, researchers haven't yet established a direct link to cancer in humans.
Marinades also contain antioxidant ingredients, various vitamins and other phytochemicals, which may provide protection from cardiovascular disease and other cell and tissue damage.
- Avoid fire flare-ups by using lean meats and meat trimmed of visible fat. Raise the rack to the highest position away from the heat or adjust the flame to low on a gas grill. Keep food slightly to the side of the heat source rather than directly over it. You can also place foil under the meat to prevent flare-ups. Use a squirt bottle of water to douse any high flames.
- Cook meats until no longer pink on the inside. Turn meat at least once during grilling to help cook it evenly. Use an instant-read thermometer placed into the deepest part of the meat - but not right next to the bone - to check to see if the meat is done. Temperatures vary depending on the type of meat.

The expiration date on any medication indicates when the ingredients have lost 10% of their effectiveness. As the weeks go by past that date, the effectiveness declines even more. Whether or not the medication is dangerous after its expiration date depends on the chemicals inside. Sometimes, when chemicals break down over time, they change into new agents that may be dangerous, but there is no specific research on which ones. Most likely, your medication will just not work as well as it should (which, of course, can be dangerous).
To keep your medications at full strength for as long as possible, store them in a cool, dark place, such as a closet, but not in the bathroom. The heat and steam of a shower or bath will make them erode faster.

A cough releases an explosive charge of air that moves at speeds up to 60 mph.
On the first day, God created the dog and said, Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.
The dog said, That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?" So God agreed......On the second day, God created the monkey and said, Entertain people,do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span.
The monkey said, Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?" And God agreed......
On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?
And God agreed again...... On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years." But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?
Okay, said God.You asked for it. So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family.. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you.

How To Clear A Stubborn Inkjet Printer Clog
by Eli Fryr
Do you own an inkjet printer? Has the print head ever clogged up on you, creating streaks or missing colors from your printing?
Clogs can be incredibly frustrating. Normally when you find out you have a clogged print head, it's because you're right in the middle of printing something important. It's one of those problems that you never ask for. It just seems to throw itself in your lap without warning, and then taunts you in your efforts to fix it.
The print head is the mechanism of your printer (or inkjet cartridge), where
the ink actually comes out.
For the most part, print head clogs can be normally be flushed out with a couple of "head cleaning" cycles. A head cleaning cycle is a built-in function of your printer. It's a specialized routine meant to address this type of problem.
This "cleaning cycle" works by sending a strong 'print signal' to your printer, while at the same time drawing a small vacuum from underneath. The combination of these two steps works in an attempt to suck out clogged ink from the print head. From my experience, you'll probably need to run between 3 and 5 cycles to fully clear a clog.
The location of the head cleaning cycle procedure varies for each printer brand, so refer to your printer owner's manual for specific instructions to find yours. Check the index first.
If you don't have your owner's manual anymore, you can check our your printer manufacturers website. Most likely, they will have your printer manual online.
There are times however, when a few standard head cleaning routines don't seem to solve the problem. A stubborn print head clog like this can be persistent enough to make you want to rip out your hair.
For times like these, you'll need to pull out the big guns!
For stubborn inkjet print head clogs, there are various cleaners out there specifically for this purpose. These cleaners are formulated to dissolve dried or "gummy" ink which may have accumulated from infrequent printer use, or even just a general build-up over time.
I personally brought an old printer "back from the dead" using a product called 'Clog Buster'. It was a printer I had purchased off of eBay which apparently hadn't been used in awhile. I spent a few hours trying to revive the printer, and 'Clog Buster' was the only thing that worked when nothing else did.
The only downside with using a cleaning product like this however, is that you usually don't have it in your immediate possession when the clog hits. Unless you have some already on hand, you'll have to wait for it to be shipped to you. In the meantime, your printing project will have to
remain on pause until it arrives.
(But maybe I can help...)
The good news is that you MAY be able to solve the problem using some basic household products. In fact, Windex glass cleaner can actually work well for dissolving dried ink. What's the secret ingredient?
Ammonia.
Tough print head clogs can usually be brought into submission by soaking the print head in a solution of 50/50% ammonia and distilled water.
A important word of warning... Ammonia is potent and powerful stuff. When working with ammonia, always make sure you've got adequate ventilation, and avoid mixing it with other chemicals. Very important.
So, if your print head is located on the inkjet cartridge itself, you'll want to soak the print head in the 50/50 solution for an hour or two.
If the print head unit is located inside your inkjet printer itself, then you'll first need to remove the inkjet cartridges. After those are removed, put some of the solution into the top of the print head (directly into the nozzle
holes) and let it sit a few hours. Go ahead and put a little more into the print head resting seat. (This is the rubber rectangle part that seals off the print head unit while the carriage is in it's resting position.)
If this initial soaking doesn't work, then repeat another time using 100% ammonia for up to one hour. Afterward, make sure to rinse completely with distilled water.
If the clog doesn't immediately clear, go ahead and let the printer sit overnight and try it again the next day. Sometimes the clog will breakdown slowly and release later as the ammonia takes it's toll.
Finally, for those of you wondering about the effectiveness of using alcohol to unclog cartridges and print head -- here's a quick note...
Alcohol won't work as well as ammonia, but may work better than a few cleaning cycles. The downside is that alcohol may actually dry out the plastics and metals in the print head. This could actually increase the chances of clogging later on down the road. So try to avoid alcohol if possible.
