Texting, grand theft auto style; alarms pose risk
By JORDAN ROBERTSON, AP
SAN FRANCISCO — Texting and driving don't go well together — though not in the way you might think.
Computer hackers can force some cars to unlock their doors and start their engines without a key by sending specially crafted messages to a car's anti-theft system. They can also snoop at where you've been by tapping the car's GPS system.
That is possible because car alarms, GPS systems and other devices are increasingly connected to cellular telephone networks and thus can receive commands through text messaging. That capability allows owners to change settings on devices remotely, but it also gives hackers a way in.
Researchers from iSEC Partners recently demonstrated such an attack on a Subaru Outback equipped with a vulnerable alarm system, which wasn't identified. With a laptop perched on the hood, they sent the Subaru's alarm system commands to unlock the doors and start the engine.
Their findings show that text messaging is no longer limited to short notes telling friends you're running late or asking if they're free for dinner.
Texts are a powerful means of attack because the devices that receive them generally cannot refuse texts and the commands encoded in them. Users can't block texts; only operators of the phone networks can.
These devices are assigned phone numbers just like fax machines. So if you can find the secret phone number attached to a particular device, you can throw it off by sending your own commands through text messaging.
Although these numbers are only supposed to be known by the devices' operators, they aren't impossible to find. Certain network-administration programs allow technicians to probe networks to see what kinds of devices are on them. Based on the format of the responses, the type and even model of the device can be deduced. Hackers can use that information to craft attacks against devices they know are vulnerable. (In this case, the researchers bypassed these steps and simply took the alarm system out of the car to identify the secret phone number.)
Actually stealing a car wouldn't be so easy.
You'd have to ensure that the phone number you found is attached to the car you're standing in front of, for instance. There are hacking tools to do that — they listen for cellular traffic around a particular vehicle — but in many cases it's easier to take a car that doesn't have an alarm.
The research from Don Bailey and Mat Solnik is unsettling because it shows that such attacks are possible on a variety of other devices that use wireless communications chips. Those include ATMs, medical devices and even traffic lights. Hackers have already sent specially crafted texts with commands to instantly disconnect iPhones from the cellular network.
Bailey, whose specialty is cellphone network security, also found that similar techniques can be used to get a certain type of GPS system to cough up its location data. Such information can be used by stalkers or home burglars, for instance.
The type of GPS system he studied is known as assisted GPS, which means that it uses cellular signals in addition to the usual satellite signals. That makes the system vulnerable.
The research isn't just about taking off with someone else's car or finding out where that person has been.
It raises the possibility of other, more sinister dangers, such as those potentially affecting braking and acceleration, said Scott Borg, director of the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, a group that studies hacking threats. That becomes possible as networked electronics are more tightly coupled with physical machinery.
"Doing one that is harmful is quite hard, but we need to prepare for people doing that," Borg said.
The research got the attention of a trade group for electric utilities, the North American Electric Reliability Corp. After the pair showed off the techniques at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas this month, the group warned that the types of wireless chips exploited by the pair are also used at power plants and said that more caution is needed in their use.
The vulnerable GPS system was made by Zoombak Inc., which promotes its products' usefulness in tracking children and automobiles. The company said it has made changes to its devices, so that outside parties can no longer get location data without passwords.
Bailey and Solnik are working with the manufacturer of the car alarm system to fix its vulnerabilities. Bailey said the unidentified manufacturer has fixed many of the security issues.
Bailey said stricter security standards are needed.
"We're so excited to use technology that we're deploying it too quickly and not really thinking about the impact of security," he said. Video demonstration : http://bit.ly/n6axTv

Our Best Turkey Stuffing
3/4 cup butter 2 1/2 cups chopped onions 2 cups chopped celery 4 teaspoons dried sage 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon dried savory 1 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon marjoram 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 14 cups dried white bread, cubed
In a large frying pan, melt butter over a medium heat. Fry onions and celery together with the dried herbs, salt and pepper, stirring often, until vegetables are tender, about 10-15 minutes.
Transfer the mixture to a very large bowl. Add the bread cubes and mix well.
If you are making the stuffing ahead: Transfer the cooked vegetable mixture to a large bowl. Let cool and refrigerate in an airtight container for 24 hours. Mix with bread cubes before stuffing the bird.
Stuff the turkey at both ends with this mixture. (see our Roast Turkey Recipe for directions on stuffing the bird).
IMPORTANT: Stuff the turkey just before baking it. Do NOT stuff the bird ahead and let it sit, even in the refrigerator. It can become infected with bacteria and make you quite ill.
Variations:
- Add 1 cup fresh chopped parsley for extra fresh herb flavor.
- A delicious addition! Add 1 to 2 cups of chopped fruit to the mix. Chopped apples, chopped dried apricots, raisins, currants or blueberries (yes, blueberries) are all amazing added to herbed turkey stuffing. Try it once and you'll be hooked.
- Replace 1 cup of the celery with a cup of chopped fennel. Fennel has a mild licorice flavor that will add a bit of a twist to our traditional turkey stuffing.

Pepto-Bismol to Banish Smelly Gas
Pepto-Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) has been shown to control the odor in flatus. It reduces hydrogen sulfide (the smelly stuff) from the colon quite dramatically (Gastroenterology, May, 1998).
Regular use of Pepto-Bismol could be problematic. Excessive bismuth can be toxic, leading to symptoms such as nausea, rash, diarrhea, stomach pain, mouth ulcers and kidney damage.

A man wanted to get into a members only club but because he couldn't become a member, the man hid and watched as the guard at the door of the club house said a number to each member as they approached, the member would respond with a number of their own, if the member responded with the correct number they were let in, if they responed incorrectly they were thrown out. One member come up to the guard, the guard said twelve and the member responded with six and was let in. Another member came to the door, the guard said six and the member responded with three and was let in. Believing he had heard enough, the reject went up to the guard, the guard said ten, and the reject said five, but was not let in, what should the reject have said?

Why did the chicken cross the road, Florida style:
If the chicken crossed I-95, it probably got hit by snowbirds and got 'recycled' by turkey buzzards.
If it crossed Rt 1, it probably got hit by a truck towing a boat and again the turkey buzzards did their recycling job.
If it crossed A1A, it probably got hit by tourists or surfers looking for better waves, and as usual, turkey buzzards did their job.
If it was a NJ chicken it bribed the turkey buzzards into giving it a lift across the road and then let them know it was an Italian 'family' (aka mafia) chicken and it'd remember them if they had any problems.

The other kid says, "What have you got to worry about? Sounds to me like you've got it made!"
The first kid says, "What if they try to escape?"

A father was trying to teach his young son the evils of alcohol. He put one worm in a glass of water and another worm in a glass of whiskey. The worm in the water lived, while the one in the whiskey curled up and died. All right, son, asked the father, "what does that show you? Well, Dad, it shows that if you drink alcohol, you will not have worms.

Teddy came thundering down the stairs, much to his father's annoyance. Teddy, he called, 'how many more times have I got to tell you to come down the stairs quietly? Now, go back up and come down like a civilised human being. There was a silence, and Teddy reappeared in the front room. That's better, said his father. Now will you always come down stairs like that? Suits me," said Teddy. I slid down the bannister.
Improve Your Wireless Network
As cool and handy as the concept of a wireless network is, it can very rapidly get frustrating. This happens primarily because of signal strength issues, which in turn, affects your browsing and downloading speeds. And before you know it, you just simply aren’t getting as fast of a speed in the bedroom as you are in the living room. Well, today I will take you through an informative and useful article about improving your home wireless network. Here we go!
1.) First, keeping the wireless router in a central place is a good idea. If you have four computers in two different rooms, placing the router somewhere in the middle ensures equal flow to both sides. On the other hand, you could stick the router under a corner table in room one and wait forever for a Web site to load when you use the PC in the other room. Whichever you prefer!
2.) Contrary to popular belief, a wireless signal is not just sent from the router to the computer. It is also sent back from the computer to the router. So, even if the computer is able to receive the signal easily, it, at times, is not able to send them back as smoothly. That is mainly because of the incompetence of the wireless network adapter inside the PC. Replacing the internal wireless adapter with a USB version (which has an external antenna) can improve this to a great extent.
3.) Sometimes, the area that needs the wireless access is too vast for the wireless router to cover the whole effectively. Hence, the signal strength problem arises again. To combat this, you can use wireless repeaters. Wireless repeaters extend your wireless network further, without you having to install another router. The repeater simply intercepts the signal from the wireless router and extends it further, thus increasing the range of the strong signal.
4.) Wireless routers can operate on different channels, much like radio stations. Now, by radio, I don’t mean Internet radio, but the regular good ol' radio. Sometimes, you can hear one radio station clearer than another. Similar is the case with the wireless routers. The channels they operate on in the U.S. are channels 1, 6 and 11. At times, one channel is clearer than the other, so in case of problems, it’s a good idea to change the channels every once in awhile in the wireless router settings.
5.) Wireless routers use the 2.4 GHz frequencies, which means that if you have other wireless electronics in your home that use the same frequency, there’s going to be a clash. Although the router will function normally, it might have to work harder to send/receive the signal. Hence, it’s a good idea to buy wireless electronics that use other frequency ranges.
6.) As with most applications, it’s very important to constantly update the firmware for your router and the drivers for your wireless network adapter. This will usually improve the performance, as well as, the reliability.
7.) Most of the wireless networks are type 802.11b, but what most people don’t realize is that 802.11g is about five times faster. If you are using an 802.11b and in spite of following the above advice, your speed still doesn’t improve, then as a last option, consider upgrading to an 802.11g. This essentially means upgrading the router and the network adapter to 802.11g equipment as well. That’s certainly bound to show a considerable improvement in your network speed.
Now, go on and give these a try. You never know what they could do for you and the wireless access you love so much!

Safeguard Your Computer
Given enough time and using the correct tools, a hacker can break into a computer and access the files. One reason hackers are able to break into computer systems so easily is because the user did not create a strong enough password. Many computer users create passwords after their family pets, favorite objects and familiar words. This is an extremely bad idea.
For starters, don’t choose a password that is in the dictionary. It takes password cracking software about 10 seconds to crack a word that is in the dictionary. The password cracking software uses a dictionary file which contains every word in the dictionary. The software takes the words and sends them at the object it is trying to crack. This dictionary file is usually easy to update, since a site on Google provides hundreds of results.
For more effective passwords, try taking two or three words, slicing them at random points and them crunching them together. For example, I could use house and railroad. My outcome might result as “houroad,” which is not in the dictionary.
However the above is not always the best way to go when choosing password. Eventually, it will be cracked, probably within nine days or so. If you are locking important information, this is not good enough.
The best password that a user can create is by mixing upper and lower case letters with numbers. An example of this would be “4xCD34z.” This password would probably take around 200 or so years or so to crack. (I don’t know a single hacker who would want to wait that long). These types of passwords are hard to memorize, but are the hardest to crack.
The length of the password is a major factor as well. The longer the password, the longer it takes to crack. To make the most complex password, a user can also add symbols to their password. Again, the greater the complexity of the password, the greater the time it takes to break it.
